Typhoon Pepeng kills four in the Philippines

Tags: , , , , , , , , , ,

04 October 2009

Typhoon Pepeng arrived in the Philippines and left four people dead as it now heads for Taiwan. Peping did not do as much damage as Typhoon Ondoy which flooded the Philippines with the record rainfall.
Tens of thousands of Filipinos evacuated their homes in fear of another Ondoy flood, which left over 400 people dead. The Typhoon Ondoy death toll is expected to rise as rescuers continue relief operations.
Discussions about car insurance, home insurance, and home loan renewals and applications are rampant because of this disaster. Many car and home insurances apparently do not cover “acts of God” events, where no one had control of the situation. It seems likely that home loan applications will rise because of the substantial damaged caused to houses all over the metro.
Also, the government is looking for volunteers who could donate goods, food, first aid kits, etc. Those who could use and administer the first aid kits to ailing victims are also necessary to help the affected people.
Typhoon Pepeng weakened slightly and changed course as it headed to north and then to Taiwan. Regardless, strong winds of 108 mph damaged towns and various communication lines.
The Typhoon Pepeng death toll stands at four people. One man drowned in Isabela whil another died presumably from pneumonia and the cold and wet weather. The National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) revealed that two other people from Camarines Sur died. One fell from a roof while a two-year-old boy drowned.

Typhoon Ondoy floods Manila, Philippines

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

27 September 2009

Tropical storm Ondoy flooded the Philippines with a month’s worth of rain that fell in just six hours. Typhoon Ondoy caused severe rainfall that resulted in the worst flooding of Manila in more than 42 years.
Ondoy poured approximately 13.4 inches of rain on Manila in just six hours, close to the 15.4-inch average for the whole month of September. Typhoon Ondoy beat the previous record of 13.2 inches recorded during a 24-hour period way back in 1967.
The Philippine government declared a “state of calamity” in Manila and around two dozen provinces that were overwhelmed by the storm. Because almost, if not all major roads were clogged by severe flood and filled with stranded motorists, Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo had to take the Metro Rail Transit (MRT), an elevated commuter train, to reach the disaster council office.
Nine people have already been declared dead as thousands were left stranded in the streets and a lot more had been forced to evacuate their homes. The Pasig River and the Marikina River, two major bodies of water in the country, had overflowed.
Mayor Mon Ilaga, mayor of Cainta, was left stranded atop a dump truck on a road that was neck-deep in water. He told ABS-CBN, a major news and TV channel by phone that many residents climbed onto roofs because of the flood dealt by typhoon Ondoy. He added:
“The whole town is almost 100 percent underwater.”
