01 December 2009

The Department of Justice has charged Andal Ampatuan, Jr., heir of a clain in Maguindanao, with the Philippines’ worst political and journalist massacre. Ampatuan directed the Maguindanao killing of 57 people comprised mainly of journalists, witnesses stated.
Three witnesses also added that they saw Ampatuan direct the Maguindanao journalist massacre with 100 gunmen, which also included police officers. Not long after, several bodies, gunned and chopped to death were found buried in three mass graves.
Though Andal Ampatuan has turned himself in already, he dies the Maguindanao journalist massacre allegiations. Six other members of the Ampatuan clan are being considered as suspects of the Maguindanao massacre, though only Andal has been charged.
Ampatuan was charged with 25 counts of murder in Cotabato city. The case will probably be tried elsewhere, though, because witnesses fear for their own safety, with the city being near to the setting of the Maguindanao journalist massacre.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has declared a state of emergency in Maguindanao. She also ordered police to confiscate unlicensed weapons and restore order – a difficult feat after journalists and women were slaughtered in the country’s worst political killing which will be remembered as the Maguindanao journalist massacre.

19 October 2009

Watch Winnie Arboleda of Burger King attack a fan at a PBA game against the Smart-Gilas Pilipinas team. Winnie Arboleda, point guard for the Burger King Whoppers of the Philippine Basketball Association, attacked Alain Katigbak, a fan at courtside, by throwing four punches and kick, which merited him a suspension without pay for the rest of the 2009-2010 season.
Arboleda will reporteldy lose around P2.7 million of his basketball salary because of the suspension without pay for attacking the fan. PBA Commissioner Sonny Barrios revealed that the BK Whopper point guard asked for forgiveness for his actions regarding the “Arboleda attacks fan” incident.
Barrios said that Arboleda was ready to face the consequences of his actions, which he attributed to the fan’s cursing. The basketball commissioner added:
“I told him so unfortunately for us, Winnie in a situation where we are, walang acceptable reason once you cross the line of hurting fans, there’s no acceptable reason, and he accepts that fact.”
Barrios also addressed the fans who watch the PBA basketball games:
“We would like to encourage our fans to be more responsible when they watch games, let’s cheer not jeer.”
Winnie Arboleda delivered a formal apology to his team, the PBA, the fans, and to the fan he attacked, Katigbak:
“I take full responsibility and express regret over the unfortunate incident that involved me and a PBA fan during the Burger King- SMART Gilas game on 16 October 2009.”
He still, however, attributed the “Arboleda attacks fan” incident to the incessant cursing of Katigbak, saying:
“My action was provoked by the incessant name-calling and cursing uttered by the said fan particularly to me each time I was within hearing distance. The continuous barrage of invectives and insults towards my person, my family and my team were just too difficult to withstand,” he explained.
Arboleda, the veteran basketball player, also urged the PBA to do something about the “provocations and invectives directed towards specific players” by fans.
Alain Katigbak said that he is ready to file a case of physical injuries against the basketball veteran for the “Arboleda attacks fan” incident. Atty. Angelo Agcaoili, lawyer of Katigbak, stated:
“Sa totoo lang, nang-asar ang kliyente ko, sinabihan nya matanda na sila at wag na sila manakit ng bata, pero hindi siya nag-mura. [In all honesty, my client drew insults, saying that the player was old and he shouldn't hurt kids, but he never cursed.]”
The lawyer revealed that Katigbak wants a much harsher punishment for Arboleda, pushing that the basketball player be banned from playing in the PBA for life.

18 October 2009

Six heavily armed robbers in black bomb squad uniforms were in a shootout with the security escorts of Taguig City Mayor Freddie Tinga after robbing a Rolex store in Greenbelt 5. Right around noon of October 18, the Greenbelt 5 shootout occured after the six robbers went up against Tinga’s escorts named Cesar Ticlaw and Efren Cenesa.
One of the robbers in Greenbelt 5 was killed in the shootout. Mayor Tinga was having lunch with relatives in a restaurant when several gunshots were heard, which he did not know involved his escorts, at around 11:50 AM. Tinga stated about the Greenbelt 5 shootout and robbery:
“My escorts were just securing the vicinity of the restaurant when they caught the robbers in the act. It was a good thing that nothing bad happened to them for responding very quickly.”
The robbers had forcibly entered the Rolex store, which had a foreigner and his pregnant wife for customers, and smashed the watches’ glass casings with their rifles.
Southern Police District Director Chief Supt. Jaime Calungsod revealed that the robbers were carrying M14 and M16 rifles. He added about the Greenbelt 5 shootout and robbery:
“One of the robbers was gunned down but the rest evaded the police. We have secured and searched every floor but it was difficult to identify them from the civilians.”
Greenbelt 5 remains closed to the public, pending investigation. The main puzzle behind this is how the robbers of the Greenbelt 5 shootout grabbed hold of bomb squad uniforms.

Typhoon Pepeng kills four in the Philippines

Tags: , , , , , , , , , ,

04 October 2009

Typhoon Pepeng arrived in the Philippines and left four people dead as it now heads for Taiwan. Peping did not do as much damage as Typhoon Ondoy which flooded the Philippines with the record rainfall.
Tens of thousands of Filipinos evacuated their homes in fear of another Ondoy flood, which left over 400 people dead. The Typhoon Ondoy death toll is expected to rise as rescuers continue relief operations.
Discussions about car insurance, home insurance, and home loan renewals and applications are rampant because of this disaster. Many car and home insurances apparently do not cover “acts of God” events, where no one had control of the situation. It seems likely that home loan applications will rise because of the substantial damaged caused to houses all over the metro.
Also, the government is looking for volunteers who could donate goods, food, first aid kits, etc. Those who could use and administer the first aid kits to ailing victims are also necessary to help the affected people.
Typhoon Pepeng weakened slightly and changed course as it headed to north and then to Taiwan. Regardless, strong winds of 108 mph damaged towns and various communication lines.
The Typhoon Pepeng death toll stands at four people. One man drowned in Isabela whil another died presumably from pneumonia and the cold and wet weather. The National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) revealed that two other people from Camarines Sur died. One fell from a roof while a two-year-old boy drowned.
