Movie “Bruno” #1 this weekend

Movie Bruno #1 this weekend

"Bruno"

In a startling development that has movie critics impressed, gay fashion lover Bruno has reached the No. 1 spot at the weekend box office! The Universal Pictures mock documentary achieved this feat amidst fellow computer-aided movie giants like “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs” and “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.”

If early records are any indication though, sustainability will be an issue. Sacha Baron Cohen‘s “Bruno” opened with a huge mark on Friday, amassing $14.4 million, then faltered the rest of the weekend, gaining only $8.8 million on Saturday and dropping further to $7.2 million on Sunday to finish with $30.4 million. Compare that to typical movie revenues, which rise on Saturday.

Compare that also to “Bruno” which only garnered $26.5 million on its opening weekend back in the 2006 hit “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.” “Borat” only started with $9.2 million on opening day Friday but, as a typical movie hit goes (and opposite to “Bruno”), soared to $10.1 million Saturday. Add that to the fact that “Bruno” debuted in over 2,700 cinemas, more than thrice the number for “Borat.” Movie critics thus predict an impending drop, a far cry to the other Baron Cohen movie, “Borat“, which raked in $128.5 million.

"Borat"

This didn’t stop lead actor Baron Cohen and “Bruno” though, from racing past 20th Century Fox‘s “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs,” which settled for second honors with $28.5 million. The “Ice Age” sequel raised its domestic total to $120.6 million. Still running strong and finishing at third   after enjoying two weekends in the No. 1 spot was Paramount’s sci-fi blockbuster “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” with $24.2 million. This further raised its domestic sales to a staggering $339.2 million, already eclipsing the first “Transformers” movie which collected $319 million back in 2007.

The estimated sales for the top 10 movies this past weekend are as follows:

1. “Bruno,” $30.4 million.

2. “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs,” $28.5 million.

3. “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” $24.2 million.

4. “Public Enemies,” $14.1 million.

5. “The Proposal,” $10.5 million.

6. “The Hangover,” $9.9 million.

7. “I Love You, Beth Cooper,” $5 million.

8. “Up,” $4.7 million.

9. “My Sister’s Keeper,” $4.2 million.

10. “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3,” $1.6 million.

Do you think “Bruno” will surpass the marks set by “Borat”? More importantly, have you even watched “Bruno” already?
