26 August 2009

Chris Brown was sentenced to five years’ probation and six months’ community labor last Tuesday for the beating of ex-girlfriend Rihanna. Brown, singer of the hit songs “Forever” and “With You”, was also ordered to stay 100 yards away from Rihanna for the next five years. If Brown were to be proven guilty of violating these terms, he could be sent to state prison.
Brown will serve his sentence in Virginia, his home state. His community labor, on the other hand, will be overseen by the police chief in Richmond. The judge also addded that she will ensure that Brown performs physical labor instead of community service. This will include mentoring young people and undergoing domestic violence counseling for a year.
A probation report cited during the hearing revealed two other violent incidents. The first happened when the couple was traveling in Europe and Rihanna slapped Chris Brown during an argument that they had. This prompted Brown to shove Rihanna into a wall. The second instance happened in Barbados when Brown broke both the front and passenger side windows on a Range Rover they were driving.
Rihanna did not attend Chris Brown’s sentencing.

On the video, Brown refers to the beating as “the incident.” There, he admits that his conduct is inexcusable, but probably in his defense, he adds that he witnessed domestic violence growing up as a child. He will answer questions about the beating in the near future, but said he wanted to speak directly to his fans first. Chris Brown added:

“I saw firsthand what uncontrolled rage can do. I have sought and am continuing to seek help to ensure that what occurred in February can never happen again.”

Chris Brown then acknowledges that the beating has hurt his reputation - he has lost sponsorship deals, radio stations stopped playing his songs, and other artists condemned him after the attack. Adamant with his desire to clean up his act, Brown mentions:

“I intend to live my life so that I am truly worth of the term ‘role model.‘”
