Swine flu vaccine supplies are lagging behind projected figures and demand as only 13 million of the promised 120 million swine flu vaccine doses are available in the US. Roughly only 10+% of the swine flu vaccine projected figure is available to the American public as production is running several weeks behind schedule.
Health officials say a single dose of the swine flu vaccine will suffice in protecting adults. Children under 10, however, will need two doses.
Government health officials blame the slow swine flu vaccine production on pharmaceutical companies who undertake a slow and outdated production process that relies on millions of chicken eggs. Also, factories that produce the syringes for the swine flu vaccine have also slowed down.
The swine flu has killed more than 800 people in the United States since April. It has continued to affect young people, with more than half of all hospitalizations since September were linked to people aged 24 and under.
The figures detailing the swine flu vaccine delays are staggering. Federal officials initially projected that by this time, 120 million doses of the swine flu vaccine would be available already. As they grew closer to the date, the projection was reduced to 45 million. Today, however, only 12.8 million swine flu vaccine doses available.
