In his first singles game since May 31, Rafael Nadal triumphed over David Ferrer in a short-lived match, which lasted only seven games. Nadal was leading 4-3 at the second round of the Rogers Cup when Ferrer, his Davis Cup teammate, retired with a left knee injury. Ferrer, a relentless player who was ranked number 19 coming in and was expected to test Nadal’s knees, claims he sustained the injury before the match.

After the short match, Nadal said his knees felt fine, but then admitted that it was too early to pronounce them fully recovered. He added:

“It was a little bit strange. The first movements are tough. That is normal.”
