Watch the video of Pope Benedict XVI getting knocked down by a woman below. A “mentally unstable” woman knocked down Pope Benedict XVI as he walked down the main aisle to begin Christmas Eve Mass.
After the pope was knocked down by the woman, who jumped the barriers in St. Peter’s Basilica to do so, 82-year-old Pope Benedict XVI quickly got up and seemed unhurt. The pope knock down video showed a woman dressed in a red jumper jumping over the wooden barriers of St. Peter’s Basilica, rushing the pope, and knocking him down before bodyguards could react.
The pope was knocked down as the pope’s procession was making its way toward the main altar during the Christmas Eve mass. People were shocked as the pope was knocked down as the procession was momentarily stopped and security came to aid the knocked down pope.
Vatican spokesman, Rev. Ciro Benedettini said that the woman who had knocked down the pope during the Christmas Eve mass appeared to be mentally unstable and had been arrested before by Vatican police. She had once knocked down Cardinal Roger Etchegaray. Benedettini stated:
“During the procession an unstable person jumped a barrier and knocked down the Holy Father. (The pope) quickly got up and continued the procession.”
After getting pushed and knocked down by the woman, Pope Benedict XVI continued with his walk to start the Christmas Eve mass. Somewhat shaken by the pope knock down incident, he leaned heavily on aides and an armrest as he sat down on his chair.
This was not the first time than an event similar to the pope knock down incident had happened. In fact, it was the second consecutive year that a security breach had happened at the service. A woman had also jumped the barriers and got close to the pope but fortunately was stopped by security.
