See the controversial picture of the PETA ad featuring Michelle Obama below. PETA has again irked controversy by featuring Michelle Obama in its anti-fur advertisements without permission. The PETA Michelle Obama ad featured a picture of Michele Obama, together with Oprah Winfrey, Tyra Banks, and Carrie Underwood underneath the slogan, “Fur-free and fabulous!”

PETA describes the new and controversial PETA Michelle Obama advertisement as “a bevy of the smartest, most stylish, and most influential women in America.” They have posted the PETA Michelle Obama ads all over the Washington D.C. Metro mass transit system. Pictures of the PETA Michelle Obama ad have also appeared in several magazines and websites.

Oprah, Tyra Banks, and Carrie Underwood have publicly endorsed the anti-fur and animal rights efforts of PETA. Michelle Obama, however, because of her stature as first lady, cannot endorse special interest groups such as PETA. As a result, The White House disproves of the use of the Michelle Obama picture by PETA in its advertisement. A spokeswoman for Michelle Obama stated:

“We did not consent to this.”

PETA has defended itself by saying that Michelle Obama has made anti-fur statements before. This, for them, gives them license to use her picture in their anti-fur campaigns, thus the development of the PETA Michelle Obama pictures and ads. PETA President Ingrid Newkirk revealed:

“We haven’t asked the White House to fund or promote the campaign, as they can’t do such things, but the fact is that Michelle Obama has issued a statement indicating that she doesn’t wear fur, and the world should know that in PETA’s eyes, that makes her pretty fabulous.”
