Pacquiao, Mayweather ordered to take urine tests

29 December 2009 | Category: Sports

Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, Jr. have been ordered to take urine tests by the Nevada Boxing Commission to save the Pacquiao VS. Mayweather megafight and to ascertain steroid use by either boxer. Executive Director Keith Kizer, acting to break the stalemate between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. stated that the two boxers had to submit to urine tests.

All this started when Mayweather accused Pacquiao of doping – especially Floyd Mayweather, Sr., who insinuated that Pacquiao’s meteoric rise among boxing’s weight classes can be attributed to steroid or human growth hormone (HGH) use. Offended, Pacquiao will sue Mayweather for such accusations – virtually ending all hopes of a Pacquiao-Mayweather boxing megafight.

The urine test order, which is an effort to revive the boxing megafight Manny Pacquiao VS. Floyd Mayweather, forces Pacquiao and Mayweather to submit to accredited urine tests tests within 48 hours. If they fail to do so, the boxers will incur fines or suspensions from the Nevada Athletic commission. Kizer stated about the move to subject to urine tests Pacquiao and Mayweather:

“That at least starts the ball rolling.”

Pacquiao VS. Mayweather may still be possible, after Mayweather’s representatives said there was footage on HBO 24/7 program that showed Pacquiao submitting to a blood test 14 days prior to his fight against Ricky Hatton. All that is needed now is a cutoff date for the blood tests that Manny Pacquiao will agree to – a cutoff that the Mayweather camp and Golden Boy will deem acceptable for blood test results.

Regarding Pacquiao-Mayweather and the Filipino champion’s terms on the blood test, Schaefer had this to say:

“We were at two days and I assume Pacquiao is at 14 days. Let’s see if somehow there can be a compromise found that maintains the integrity of the tests. If that can be done in a manner acceptable to Pacquiao, I will take it to Mayweather’s team.”

Nevada Boxing Commission Chairman Pat Lundvall’s order to subject Pacquiao and Mayweather to the urine tests fall under an out-of-competition testing regulation which went into effect last year. This allows state boxing authorities to order boxers to comply to urine tests, in an effort to curb steroid and human growth hormone (HGH) use of boxers. Kizer stated about the Pacquiao and Mayweather urine tests:

“We’re always hopeful that when we do drug testing it comes back negative. I don’t know if this will help the chances of the fight happening. But with all this talk of drug tests, let’s actually do one.”

30 urine tests have been ordered in the last 18 months. The latest one will hopefully revive the boxing megafight Pacquiao VS. Mayweather.
