Rumors have been spreading about Apple‘s plans to release a portable tablet-sized computer that can surf the Web later this year. More than that, it may also serve as an electronic book reader.

Silicon Valley was the first to state that Apple was developing a new touch-screen computer described by some as a large-screen iPod Touch. It would have a screen that may measure up to 10 inches diagonally and may come out during Christmas time – just in time for Apple to offer the tablet computer so the company can capitalize on Christmas shopping season.

Other rumored features include wi-fi capability and a special platform for electronic reading. Publishers have said to be in contact with Apple about offering books on the new gadget. Experts have already predicted it to rival Amazon‘s popular Kindle electronic reader.

The company is still in hot pursuit of music dominance, as Apple may install new software through a project codenamed “Cocktail” aimed at stimulating digital sales of albums. “Cocktail” would offer interactive features, such as lyric sheets, photos and videos with music album downloads.

Record labels EMI, Sony Music, Warner Music, and Universal Music Group have already begun talks with Apple.

Apple is traditionally highly secretive about projects under development, revealing them only at launch and guarding zealously against leaks. Also rumored for release soon is the new iPod Touch.
