Kanye West, always controversial at the VMAs, interruped Taylor Swift‘s award acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. Taylor Swift won the award for Best Female Video for her song, “You Belong with Me“, which beat out Beyonce‘s “Single Ladies“, and began her acceptance speech at the VMAs by stating:
“Thank you so much! I always dreamed about what it would be like to maybe win one of these some day, but I never actually thought it would have happened. I sing country music so thank you so much for giving me a chance to win a VMA award.”
At this point, Kanye West stormed the stage and took the microphone. Kanye then told everyone that Beyonce deserved the award over Taylor Swift, saying:
“Yo Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’ll let you finish, but Beyoncé has one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time!”
Beyonce was shocked and the crowd at the Radio City Music Hall was left stunned at Kanye’s actions. They booed him and gave a humiliated Taylor Swift a standing ovation.
