Watch the video of Darren Bent’s beach ball goal in the Sunderland-Liverpool match. Darren Bent of Sunderland scored a goal against Liverpool when his goal attempt hit a red beach ball and bounced into the back of the net in their Premier League soccer match.
The Darren Bent beach ball goal had first been initiated when a red beach ball floated onto the soccer field in the opening minutes of the game between Sunderland and Liverpool in the Premier League. Bent took a shot that Pepe Reina, the goalkeeper of Liverpool, appeared to have covered. But Bent’s ball hit the red beach ball, deflecting the soccer ball’s path past Reina and into the back of the net, thus causing the now infamous Darren Bent beach ball goal.
Strange as it may seem, the beach ball goal was counted and not waved off by the referees. It came at the fifth minute of the soccer match at the Stadium of Light.
Having been the only goal of the soccer match, Liverpool lost to Sunderland 1-0, pulling them further out of title contention of the Premier League. Worse, it had been found out that the red beach ball, the culprit of the Darren Bent beach ball goal, was thrown onto the field by a Liverpool fan.
Rafa Benitez, manager of soccer team Liverpool, had this to say about the loss:
“We didn’t play well but we had bad luck.”
